'Iconic' doesn’t necessarily mean mainstream success or massive media exposure, instead, we focus on albums that are significant within their genre, serving as cultural reflections of their time. While 'ground-breaking' might be an overused term, it is apt for describing albums that do have a lasting impact and influence.

Our first feature is Orbital's debut 1991 album, often referred to as the “Green Album” due to its distinctive green sleeve.

In the 1980s, many New Wave bands were transitioning from guitar-based sounds to synth-pop, heavily influenced by pioneers like David Bowie, Kraftwerk, and Giorgio Moroder. Bands such as OMD, Depeche Mode, and Gary Numan were at the forefront of this electronic movement. By the late '80s, electronic music had become a dominant force, especially with the rise of dance music and rave culture, driven by advancements in electronic musical instruments.

Enter Paul and Phil Hartnoll, the pioneering UK electronic duo known as Orbital. They produced a groundbreaking sound that brought electronic music from underground raves to a wider audience. Their ability to blend intricate rhythms, atmospheric sounds, and compelling melodies set them apart. The “Green Album” and its follow-up, the “Brown Album,” are considered milestones in electronic music, showcasing their talent for creating immersive auditory experiences.

Released in 1991, the “Green Album” continues to be a classic. In 2024, the album was reissued on vinyl, reaching a new generation of listeners and rekindling the interest of old-school fans who had relied on their CD copies for over 30 years. 

The expanded 2x LP edition is a worthy purchase for anyone interested in electronic music, highlighting the genre's evolution, and its current mainstream success. Hats off to the Hartnoll brothers for this timeless work, and even more respect for their ongoing tour in the UK featuring this album.

Orbital's innovative production, commitment to live performance, and ability to blend danceable beats with meaningful themes have cemented their status as pioneers in the electronic music genre. They have influenced countless artists and shaped the sound of electronica for decades.
